Good question and we’re glad you asked.  Basically there are four steps you’ll want to follow when considering going for this type of certification.  First things first, you’ll need to be qualified to even be considered for admission to a school.  Second, you’ll need to find an accredited school, more on that later.  Third, you’re going to have a tuition to pay, so make sure you’ve got your financial ducks in a row.  Last, but not least if actually completing the course itself.  Those are the actual steps, but first let’s talk about exactly what a computer forensics degree will provide you with.

You’ll be trained in computer systems first and foremost.  Computers are the basis of this type of career, so you’re going to learn all about them from the inside out, literally.  You’ll go over other topics such as data management, manipulation of software programs, and security aspects as well.  There are in fact, a very wide range of community colleges, larger universities, and even technical career institutes that can offer you the education you’ll need to follow through with your choice to equip yourself with a computer forensics degree.  Let’s make a quick distinction however, before we go any further.  You might be thinking of computer forensics and think of the popular television show, CSI.  Think again, because there is a difference between computer forensics and forensics science.  The latter is more a biological approach to the subject.  That is where you will conduct tests and make evaluations based on physical evidence collected at crime scenes.  Computer forensics focuses primarily on retrieving and analyzing records from computer systems.  Be very careful as to which one you choose.

Now, back to the first step of the requirements we mentioned above.  To enter an institution, you’ll need to have taken certain classes in high school.  These classes include, but are not limited to algebra, calculus, English, computer sciences, and some type of statistics class.  It is  usually recommended for those taking courses to obtain a computer forensics degree, that they minor in a field such as computer science.  This will give you, as an emerging student, the proper background and knowledge to properly carry out your day to day tasks when the time comes to use your newly acquired skills.

Twenty years ago computer crime was unheard of.  Now, it’s becoming more and more present in this day and age, that will quite possibly be duped as the computer or at least the technology age.  Because of this apparent rise of cyber crimes, as they’re often called, the need for educated professionals to help solve these crimes is at an all time high.  These illegal doings have to do with skilled hackers thieving one’s personal information, such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, and other personal information.  Look around and most universities and technical training schools are now offering one the ability to obtain a computer forensics degree.

If you are still young, perhaps in high school and are considering this type of profession, you’ll want to be sure to keep in close contact with your guidance counselor.  He or she will help you to choose courses now that will be of great benefit to you when the time comes to get accepted at a computer forensics school.  Most importantly will be your selection, participation, and achievements in the subjects of math and science.   A computer forensics degree relies heavily on your understanding of both.  You’ll want to, if possible take your math and science courses all the way through high school.  So, yes, that would mean continuing on with them in your junior and senior year to have the best chance at getting accepted into an accredited school for computer forensics.

If you are finished with high school and perhaps maybe already in college for another field of study and have changed your mind about your career path, that is still possible to achieve.  All you’ll have to do is finish off the current semester and then just reorganize your plan of attack.  Again, speaking with a career counselor at your institution will help you greatly.  They can properly direct you as to which courses will be required for you to successfully acquire a computer forensics degree or certificate.  You’ll want to be sure, however, that you know the difference when computer forensics and forensic science.  There is a big difference between the two and we have briefly touched upon those differences in a previous post.  The latter deals with more of a science approach to things, involving analyzing actual physical components such as computer hardware for fingerprint evidence and other clues.
